  ......GROWING AWARENESS OF SELF AND SUBSTANCES PROGRAM (GASSP)
         

This is a specialized program developed in partnership with the York Region Public School Board and the York Region Catholic School Board in York Region.

Referrals to this program come from secondary schools in York Region. The program is for students and their family to become aware and to receive education about substance use. 

 

Program Design:
l..When students enter the program no assumptions are made about a student’s level of involvement with substances
l..Individual assessment
l..Up to 6 hours of Counselling and awareness education to meet his/her needs
l..Take home materials to raise awareness, build self esteem and develop social skills
 
The first session is a family meeting which allows every member of the family an opportunity to share his or her concerns in a respectful and open way.  Following the first family meeting the student meets with their counselor for four individual sessions.  The final session is a planning meeting which allows the family an opportunity to reflect on the program, discuss any outstanding issues to be addressed, and consider any recommendations.  Each session is approximately one hour in length.  All components are required for completion of the program.
