We recognize the emotional toll and stress which can come when substance use plays a prominent role in the life of a youth and their family.
The Parent Group is an 8-week group for parents whose youth (aged 12-24) are struggling with substance use concerns. The focus of the group is providing some education around the impact of different substances, and offering an opportunity for parents to self-reflect and share supportive strategies with other parents in a safe, non-judgemental environment.
The group is co-facilitated by two counsellors from the Youth & Family Program. Each weeks covers a specific topic or theme, including:
Provides an orientation to our Clinical Philosophy, and looks at how Bio-Psycho-Social-Spiritual factors are at play in the formation and treatment of substance use concerns.
FACTORS THAT INFLUENCE SUBSTANCE USE
Explores different reasons your young person might be turning to substances and how that understanding can impact our response.
Strengthening healthy communication strategies in the family.
Explores various approaches to parenting and how different forms of parenting help support youth in their development.
Resources and tools related to self-care will be reviewed and practiced.
Youth speakers from a local group, YouthSpeak (www.youthspeak.ca), will join us to share their stories of recovery.
Parent speakers from YouthSpeak will join us to share their own perspectives on recovery.

The group meets on Wednesdays from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. Parents are encouraged to attend all eight sessions. Intake and pre-group orientation interview required prior to group entry.
